A/N: HAPPY BIRTHDAY PEEPAW HAYDEN!! Omg he’s turning 44 can’t believe it. So this is part 1 of this little fics I’m making for his bday. Part 1 is cute fluff and part 2 is slightttt smut.
WC: 1.2k
SUMMARY: Celebrating your husband birthday with a surprise party was something your daughter loved doing. // Reader is in her 30’s and for the sake of it the daughter doesn’t have a name.

MLST // PART2
BIRTHDAY PARTY
Hayden was always a "Birthdays aren’t important" guy. So when your 8-year-old daughter told you she wanted to do something for her father, who could have told her no?
It started with subtitles question now and then coming from the two most important women in his life.
"What is your favorite color?"
"What is your favorite sport?"
"Chocolate or Vanilla?"
You figured out how to get the answer by the giggle of your daughter. And as the little spy that she was, she got everything noted down in the notebook you gave her a few months ago.
So when Hayden was out to buy farm groceries, she sat down on your lap and began reciting all the important details she wanted to put on the party.
"Daddy likes blue, hockey and vanilla!" She explained with excitement.
"Do you know what hockey team? We could buy him a hat if you’d like?" You already knew the answer, your husband only ever had one team on his mind, the one he grew up in.
"Maple leaf!" She said all smiling. "Can we go now?"
"He’s going to come back soon. We can go buy everything tomorrow after school if you’d like." You chuckled, softly drawing patterns in her hair.
She quickly agreed and ranted about her days and the work she had to do. From the math homework to her friend breaking an arm, you looked at her face, the same one you fell in love with.
When the door opened, she shushed her voice and ran to the entryway, waiting for her father.
"Daddy!" She exclaimed and jumped in a hug. Hayden let the bags down to catch her up.
Her smaller arms wrapped around his chest while he supported her waist, she wasn’t 3 anymore and he wasn’t 20 either.
"Hey love, how was your day?" He groaned softly as he pulled her down again. He smiled softly at you in the living room when he spotted you.
"It was good, work was great."
He walked to the chair you were sitting on, enveloping your lips in a tender kiss as you raised your head toward him.
"I bought food for the pigs and fertilizer." Hayden added, going after the bags he left in front of the door. He then took them to the garage that lead outside.
Once he came back, you were already getting the ingredients out for a home taco night. Tortillas, minced steak, cheese, tomato, lettuce, pepper and onion.
He wrapped his hand from behind you, resting his head in the crook of your neck, giving you gentle kisses.
"You might need to help her, I don’t think her math assignments are gonna do themselves alone."
He let out one of his usual deep chuckles; "Yeah, I’ll do that."
So here you two where, going from one shop to another to get him the best gifts. To make sure you didn’t forget anything, you had a list with everything you were planning to buy.
• A Toronto Maple Leaf cap.
• A big blue cake written on it "Happy Birthday Daddy."
• Different types of spices for meat seasoning.
• A gift card for his favorite golf shop.
• A new watch.
• Blue and white balloon.
• Bright coloring pen mostly for your daughter
(And a red lingerie set you wouldn’t buy with her around.)
After what seemed like hours of research, you both found everything you wanted. Lucky you, Hayden was out for a Comicon in the state, which gave you two days to prepare before he came back.
Your child had it all planned, you would hide when you heard the sound of the door opening and scream "Surprise!" when he walked inside the living room with the gifts displayed and the balloon holding onto it.
"Not this one mom! This one!" She pointed to another shade of blue as she drew the card for Hayden. A truly beautiful drawing of the house they lived in with leaves in the bottom.
"See now the sky is different than from the lake." She smiled proudly at her work, she was quite talented for an eight-year-old.
"I see honey." A grain displayed on your face as you wrapped different gifts in a again blue and gray paper wrapper.
"Do you want to sign too?" She questioned, raising the handmade card to your face. Her little eyes sparkled with joy and excitement.
You opened the letter and wrote a little sentence under her lovely paragraph. "Another year of love with you, couldn’t be more grateful. Happy birthday, I love you Hay xx."
You let go of the gifts when you heard your phone ringing with a notification. Taking it out of your pocket, you noticed it came from the man himself.
Hey love, how are you two doing?
You smiled as you read. You could never get rid of his sweet gesture.
Doing great, missing you though :)
Three small dots appeared as you waited for his text.
I’ll be back soon xx
"Mom, what are you doing?" A little voice stirred you back to reality. You showed her the text before asking playfully;
"Do you want to send Daddy a pic? Make a grimace."
You both stuck your tongues out, before laughing at the result. Clicking on the sent button in the bottom corner, It wasn’t long before you could read at the bottom of the screen that he saved it to his phone and replied with a smiling emoji.
Two days later, a cake was in the living room, gifts and balloons were all over the place, and all that was missing was your husband. You couldn’t deny it; you were just as excited as your child was.
She was jumping all over the house, stumbling on her feet as she waited for Hayden to cross the door. Every five minutes, she would ask you when was he getting there.
"Be patient honey, you don’t wanna ruin the surprise before he even gets here." You giggled, and she responded with a groan.
Barely fifty minutes later, you heard his car pull up in the entry. It was your cue to go to your hiding spot. Step by step, he got closer to you, until he reached the door and opened it gently. He knew you were in since the door was unlocked.
"I’m home!" He said, hoping to hear the familiar voices he loved, but he heard nothing.
"Someone’s here?" He questioned again, no responses. He would lie if he said he wasn't worried.
But all the worries of the world disappeared when he saw the blue decorations and heard both of your voices yell surprise in unison.
"Happy birthday Daddy!" As usual, she ran to his arms with the brightest smile on her face. She hugged him hard enough to make up for the two days he spent without her.
Once he let go of her, you made your way to him, enveloping him in your warm embrace.
"Happy birthday honey."
He kissed you, his hand rubbing gently at your cheeks. "Thank you love." He mumbled in your ear.
Your loving moment was stopped by a hand gripping your two hands apart. "Dad! Come open your presents, mine first!!"
And with that, he opened the cards followed by the maple leaf cap you bought in her name. He smiled before putting it on.
"Wow, that’s so cool. But you know you’re my best birthday present." He gently tapped on her nose with a grin.
And your heart melted at the sight of the two most beautiful people in your world.

Oh baby, is it time.
normally this is where you'd expect to see @yamball and her magnificent primers.
Alas, it is but me and my attempt to let the world know about the puck-slinging, hit-throwing, scared of haunted houses, pale as a vampire forward that has captured our hearts:
Tye Kartye

*disclaimer: all of this information is googleable & found across various interviews from Tye, his parents and other information surrounding him & games he has been in! If you want a link to a specific article, please feel free to ask! Also, feel free to send this to others, but keep the primer on tumblr & don't crosspost to other platforms :) keeping fourth walls intact is very important to me.
Childhood
Tye Kartye was born to Richelle & Todd Kartye on April 20, 2001.
His mom is a clinical nurse educator & his father is a chemistry teacher in Kingston.
Tye also has a younger sister, Talya, who is two years younger. They were both also incredibly athletic kids. Tye played soccer and hockey, plus touch football while Talya played basketball and volleyball.
This boy is also so hardworking. Well-known by the nickname, "No Quit" Kartye, he is constantly lauded by numerous past coaches as incredibly hard-working, and focused. To quote his dad, he knew from his childhood that, "he wanted and was going to be in the NHL."
included also, since there are very few photos of Karts as a kiddo: here are some of his Prezi's. Note from topics like stick flex to environmental effects, he is so dedicated and focused in his details. Truly a teachers' son
Stick Flex Prezi
Environmental Effects Prezi
Tough Road Ahead
Of course, Tye's path hasn't been easy to where he is and it starts pretty young.
He took the more traditional route, played in house leagues before going up into high school hockey and then AA & AAA.
Of course, then comes time for the OHL draft. Karts isn't drafted in the first round, nor the second round, not even the third.
Tye is drafted by the Soo Greyhounds in 2017 in the eighth round. Not only is he selected dead in the middle, but he also was cut his first training camp. Instead, he went back to midget AAA and worked his ass off.
In fact, his former coach John Dean, who was named HC of the Greyhounds in 2018-2019 had heard about the skinny kid told to get bigger/stronger in his exit meeting. He came in that year, and said about Karts that "Here comes this moose of a man, who clearly took direction very literally and took it to heart."
Karts took his time in the OHL, and spent a good bit of it working to improve. As it came closer to draft time, he bumped up his work to a more physical level. This was supposed to help his game, but also his potential for the draft. Keep this in mind.
Karts was first eligible for the 2019 draft. He was not selected. Now, he'll mention that he didn't feel he was ready at all at the time.
But! He does partake in the 2019 Development Camp for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
So, Karts plays another year and, is eligible for the 2020 draft.
He isn't selected again. In fact, routinely his scouting reports talk about his skating ability, or lack thereof. Even for a larger player for his age (6'0 and 175+), his skating was seemingly enough of a deterent. He was disappointed, especially after a good season.
Then 2020-21 hits and the OHL season is cancelled. Tye keeps practicing.

The Undrafted Kid
2021 comes, and the Kraken need bodies for their first development camp. They've got draft picks (Matty Beniers, Ryker Evans, Ryan Winterton to name a few) but they've gotta invite a few more for the incoming guys to spend time with.
Mike Dawson, a scout for the Kraken, started doing his homework. He noted how weird it was this kid hadn't been picked, mentioned it might be because he's a later bloomer.
He gets an invite to the 2021 Development Camp, and while he doesn't get a contract the Kraken now know his name.
He begins to push in his 2021-22 season with the Greyhounds. Not only did he recieve an A, he also scored over 100 career points with them, but also ended the year 4th overall in league scoring, and led the league in PPGs and GWGs as well as ended the season with 79 points (and 57 PIMs, he's been a bit of yapper his whole life).
So March 2022 hits, and the Kraken finally bite. Tye gets an ELC, and he's ready to work.
Also additionally, Ron Francis is an ICON for Tye, who is a Soo Greyhounds alum. The Rink in the Soo is literally on Ron Francis Way.
CVF + Hard Work makes the Dream Work
Tye comes into the new CVF team for the 22-23 season. He attended Kraken training camp, but let's be real. Tye needed more time to prepare.
Karts comes in, and is ready to show off what he can do. He also is trading cold, Canadian weather for the hot Valley and grabbing his golf clubs.
Note of importance: he becomes really good friends with Ryker Evans & Luke Henman.
He starts as a fourth-liner. And, he struggles. He has little ice time, as well as few opportunities.
But, he gets better. And better, and better and better. Soon, he's one of the Firebird's top 6 forwards, and he's skyrocketing towards being a potential call up.
Although it comes later, by the end of the 22-23 Firebirds season (off of a devastating Game 7 loss to the Hershey Bears), Tye is awarded the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for AHL Rookie of the year and is also placed on the AHL Rookie All-Star Team. He led all rookies in points, and appeared in every game for the Firebirds that season.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves, because Tye's breakout moments in the AHL don't just end there. They lead to the real deal.

The Call Up & Goal Heard Round Colorado
So come April, Tye gets recalled to the Kraken who are going on a completely unprecedented and expected playoff run. Not only is it a little unexpected (he's a rookie coming up from his first year in the AHL instead of a vet, and he's having to replace the Jared McCann).
But, Tye gets it because of what has always been the case. He's a hardworker, a grinder and he will make others notice him through it.
So, he comes in for Game 5 of the First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs versus the Colorado Avalanche. He finds out that morning he's playing, and sends a single word text to his mom, just saying "playing" at 12:00 PM EST.
His parents begin their journey to Denver, arriving just a few minutes into the first period.
The first period stays scoreless, and the second begins. Geekie scores, before a response by Nathan MacKinnon.
Then a few moments later, Nate MacKinnon trips and is laying on the ground. The crowd is roaring for a call, and Eberle is skating the puck up and around Colorado goal. A quick shot down and a one-timer from Karts nails the puck in the back of the net past the Avs goalie.
Let me say, even for those as a fan of the Avs, the look on NateMac's face when this happens is unbelievable. He's in shock, completely. And meanwhile, Tye is having a fantastic time grinning and celebrating what only 7 other players have done, scoring their first goals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Also, let it be noted that Karts gets back to the locker room after the game. Pure joy from his goal, and what is the first thing he does? Check his phone to see the Firebirds game and how they did.
Not only was that his first instinct, he also was almost more excited about the potential to be back down with the Firebirds. He loves following his dream, but god did he love the Firebirds and family he built there.
Of course, the Kraken’s road to the Stanley Cup is ended in Game 7 of the Second Round vs. the Stars. But! In this time, Kartye has stayed up and even in the place of Jared McCann in some spots.
And then he goes back down to CV for the harrowing journey that was their 22-23 Calder Cup Playoff Run.

The Summer After & Rookie Experiences
Of course, Tye became one to watch in the lead up to the 23-24 season.
During which included a delightful video with bestie Ryker Evans and Matt Tennyson, on Episode 7 of Tenny Talks.
I'm simply going to link to the video, because it is insanely funny and it also shows off Tye's personality so well.
So, the summer ends and Tye ends up with the Kraken for 23-24 season.
I could probably spend hours discussing this season, but for our key highlights we're gonna focus on just a few things.
Throwback to our note of importance: anytime Ryker gets called up, he stays in a hotel. Not only does he end up knowing the car valet by name, any time he does almost anything, it is with Tye & Joey. He literally went over to Tye’s to do laundry while Tye’s girlfriend cooked them dinner. Besties for real.
First and foremost, Tye doesn't get a ton of chances. First rookie up (really the only rookie during the season for the Kraken minus other call ups), he gets scratched first a decent amount of times, especially prior to December. But! He keeps working hard, and by the end of the season he has well cemented his place as a fourth liner (who can def move up the line up if needed to).
Second, he really starts to gain a lot of perspective & skills from Yanni Gourde. Note, not only did he dress up as the Easter Bunny in 2024 for the Kraken's kiddos (like Matty did in 2023), but he also really focuses on the aspects of his game that he can improve and make stronger. So what does he do?
He gets into a few scrums (which early on he loses badly), and becomes known as a player who will fight for his teammates. (key fights include: him absolutely lighting up Pospisil after the first period hit on Adam in the Kraken v. Calgary game on March 3).
He also starts to up his physicality. And when I say up, I mean up. Tye ended the 23-24 season with 229 hits, placing him 19th in the entire league.
And of my favorite: Tye is a Grade A yapper. Like literally, this man will yap whenever he needs to. And one of the most iconic times might I add is against Connor McDavid, who Karts almost succeeds to into scrapping with. Known non-fighter Connor McDavid. (Note: this occurred after McDavid checked Ryker Evans, these firebirds turned squids don't play about each other).

This Season and Beyond
So where does that leave Tye now? Well, if you tune in to almost any Kraken game, you're sure to see him on the fourth line (likely with Yanni Gourde & Brandon Tanev).
He’s likely to be spotted hanging out with fellow former firebirds Joey Daccord, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans. They all went to the Halloween party in a group costume and are frequent dinner buddies, with Joey finding gluten-free restaurants for himself and Ryker.
There's also some interest bubbling up, especially because as of posting this, the Kraken re-acquired Daniel Sprong. What does that mean? Well, due to lots of cap things & money stuff, the Kraken essentially with every player healthy can only carry a 20-man roster. This means either someone has to be traded, or you've gotta send the 13th forward down to the AHL. While Karts hasn't been rumored in any trades (and frankly his contract isn't big enough trade value-wise to really help), there is still the possibility he could go on waivers and be sent back down to CV if not performing. So this is definitely a step-up time while the Kraken wait for Vince Dunn to get off of LTIR (which we saw on the 11/12 game against CBJ, where Karts scored the first goal in the second period and his second of the year).

michigan

August 29, 2016
Allison glanced around her new room in their house in Michigan, they had just got to Michigan this morning.
Her room was lot bigger of a room then their house in Toronto and she likes it a lot more, she a light pink accent wall, all her furniture wood, a jar filled of seashells on her dresser, pink decor scattered across the room and a few posters scattered across her room.
Ellen knocked on the door and walked in seeing Allison fixing her pink throw blanket on her bed, “Getting all settled?” Ellen asked softly, out of all her kids Allison seems to be the most excited about moving and Ellen had a feeling that was because they are closer to the water here.
“Yeah.” Allison nodded softly and flopped down on her bed as Ellen walked over sitting down next to her.
“I have a present for you.” Ellen’s words made Allison perk up and lift her head seeing her Mom holding a little box.
Allison sat up and Ellen handed the box to her, Allison opened the box seeing a necklace with a charm, a A charm.
“I know you like my initial necklace i thought you should have one too.” Ellen softly mused brushing her hand across Allison’s messy french braid. Ellen has a E necklace she wears often and Allison has always loved to fiddle with it mostly when she was younger.
Allison smiled happily, “I love it.”
“Here let me put it on for you.” Ellen pushed her braid over her shoulder and clipped the necklace around Allison’s neck and Allison glanced down at it on her neck and smiled softly touching the charm.
“Thanks Mama.” Allison softly kissed her Mom’s cheek making Ellen smile softly at her only girl.
“If you get your brothers we can head down to the water before dinner.” Ellen offered grinning at Allison’s excited gasp and she quickly got up rushing out of her room calling out to her brothers making Ellen fondly laugh.
Ellen walked down downstairs and Allison had managed to get Quinn, Jack and Luke all ready by the door in just a few minutes and she shared a fond look with her husband before they all walked out and got in the car.
Allison was the first out of the car once they parked at the lake and she was rushing down the sand towards the water and Luke was quickly behind her. Jack slowly followed on his phone and Quinn followed holding a bag for Allison’s seashells.
Ellen leaned against Jim smiling happily seeing her four kids all happy and all bending down on the sand to collect seashells for Allison.
Allison has always loved to collect seashells and it’s not surprising to see jars of seashells through out the Hughes house. Ellen knew they would only get more jars now that they lived so close to the water.
Allison laughed as Jack squirmed when the water hit his feet and he quickly backed away.
She liked it a lot better getting to live with all her brothers this year instead of staying in Toronto with Quinn and now Jack leaving to play in the NTDP. The only downside would be having another boy living in their house, one of Jack’s teammates but Jack said she would like him.
Allison glanced around at three brothers, all of them holding seashells in their hands, Michigan feels like home already to her.
September 6, 2016
Allison was sitting on the bleachers with Luke and he was helping her on her spelling homework as they waited for both Quinn and Jack’s hockey practices.
They have been living in Michigan for about a week and she loves it her. She would never admit it but Jack is as right and she did like Alex a bit, he wasn’t the worse choice of a boy to have living in the house and he was a lot calmer than Jack.
Quinn’s practice was finished first and he walked over to his two youngest siblings and sat down next to Allison glancing at the paper she was working on and Luke was helping her on.
Allison glanced up hearing Jack’s voice being loud with another loud voice and she grimaced.
Quinn laughed softly seeing her face and could not wait to see Allison meet Jack’s teammates.
“Goose!” Jack beamed excitedly as he saw his baby sister here, “You have to meet the boys!”
“This is Trevor, Cole and Matt!” Jack proudly introduced and he laughed as he went to ruffle her hair and she smacked his hand away, “And you already know Alex”.
“I’ve heard so much about you!” Trevor started rambling loudly. Allison slowly turned with wide eyes at Quinn and he snorted nodding back.
Cole softly shook her hand saying a small hi and Matt just waved giving her a smile and automatically she liked Matt the most out of the four boys.
“And Jack said that Goose.” Trevor kept rambling.
“Allison.” Allison spoke up crossing her arms over her chest, no one is allowed to call her Goose unless they are family.
Trevor slowly stopped talking looking at her and then at Quinn and then back at her, “Ah man you’re just like Quinn.” Trevor pouted making the boys laugh at his pout and Quinn and Allison shared a look.
“You talk a lot.” Allison said bluntly making Quinn pat her shoulder with a proud smile and all the boys besides Trevor continued to laugh.
“I do!” Trevor just beamed proudly.
Allison slowly blinked realizing she’s gonna see Trevor around a lot now especially because Trevor is the one Jack has yapped the most about.
She loves living in Michigan but right now listening to Trevor yapping, Toronto doesn’t sound too bad.
Quinn nodded understanding the look on her face because he feels the same, Luke just laughed at Quinn and Allison’s expressions as they looked at Trevor.
“Come on Moose.” Allison got up after packing her bag and grabbed Luke’s hand pulling him away from the boys.
Luke just laughed and let his sister pull him away. Quinn threw his head back laughing seeing Allison quickly walking away with Luke.

HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
summary: reader (older hughes sister) takes a small flight to toronto to say goodbye to the home she grew up in before moving to michigan.
pairings: hughes brothers x older sister!reader
warnings: just angst. part three of my older hughes! sister au so it kinda contradicts never grow up bc i almost made the michigan house be her childhood house with the childhood room line, but the toronto house was her childhood house, i just lowkey forgot they lived in toronto in the first part.
you didn't expect to be here. you didn't expect yourself to take a last minute flight to toronto and stand in the front of the house you used to call home. but you felt drawn to do so, you had to come back one last time. even if people told you you couldn't, you still did.
you felt yourself walking up the stairs. your handprints littered them, along with little quinnys, little jackys, and little little lukeys. the multi-colored handprints were a stark contrast to the white, chipped paint of the porch stairs.
they creaked under you, causing you to step slower. you now stood in front of the screen door that covered the red door. your hand shakily reached up to the doorbell, pressing it. the all-familiar tune played. it wasn't a normal 'ding!' no, your mother made it ring to a beat. one you would tap your foot to every time it was rung.
the door creaked open, revealing a slightly older woman. "can i help you?" she asked, eyes squinted from the sun.
"im so sorry to bother you, i know you dont know me but, i um- i used to live here." you awkwardly laughed. "me and my brothers are actually the kids who did those handprints on the stairs." you informed.
she opened the screen door, stepping out. she had a soft smile on her face and waved you over to the small swing that was on the porch.
you two ended up sitting and talking. "the back bedroom, that was mine. i did my homework on a dainty desk and that room is where i learned to play guitar." you spoke.
a fond smile was on the womans face. "i've never once changed anything in this house since me and my family moved here." she told.
"i couldnt. i actually hoped one of the kids who did those handprints would show up. i like learning of what this place used to be. plus, whoever did that kitchen was amazing." she chuckled.
"my dad helped my mom do that. it was a dream kitchen for her. he helped a lot of her dreams come true with this house." you said.
you looked over the property. the green grass, the live oak, the trees that surrounded the house. you looked back at her.
"do you- do you think i could come in? i just want to look around. i swear as soon as im done, ill leave. i wont take nothing, just my memories." you smiled.
she let you. you found yourself tracing the walls as you walked upstairs. the same texture was there as it used to be. the steps still creaked twice with every step. the air was still cold, as it used to be.
you walked into your old room. the walls were still the dark purple they used to be. it made you remember who you used to be. the happy-go-lucky little girl whos only care in the world were her three younger brothers.
you weren't done looking around, but you already dreaded the idea of leaving. leaving home wasn't what you wanted to do. doing it once was hard enough. you could see yourself, your younger self, sitting at her desk.
feet kicking with a pencil in her hand as she hummed to some random song that she heard on the tv. she would smile every once in awhile as she did her math homework, realizing she understood something.
you could see young jack running in, a water gun in his hand, and shooting you with it, ruining your mood and your homework. you could see little luke rushing in behind him, tackling jack to the ground. little quinn would pin jack down and little you would tickle him as payback. luke and quinn were your little sidekicks.
after awhile, you walked back to the porch. "thank you again, ma'am. this meant a lot to me. it helped being able to see and feel the house again." you told her.
she smiled. "of course dear." you gave her a polite nod and walked down the handprint-filled stairs. you got to see the house that built you, and instead of leaving with tears, you left with a small smile.

Take Care
(A nice short sweet thing featuring Toronto's best dressed: Willy 88. This came after Sandin said he would do anything for friends and family at any hour.. I mean how could you NOT love that?!)
“You don’t have to go, ya know,” Willy said as his fingers played with your hair. The sun was setting just as you two woke up from a much needed nap. “I really have to go, I should have left an hour ago actually because,..” you sigh and still not making any move to get out of bed. Willy finishes your sentence for you, “you need to help your little sister with homework and then make sure she gets to school on time tomorrow. I know. It’s okay.” He brushes the strands behind your ear.
This was not the first time you had to rush and leave him. It all started as soon as your father got a new job that required more hours and a farther commute. That ended up with most of the house work to fall on you and that included taking care of your sister. You were reaching a breaking point, but Willy didn’t need to know that he already had too much on his plate.
He suddenly rolls himself on top of you, supporting himself with his elbows. “You take care of so much, the house, your sister, who’s taking care of you?” His necklace dangles in between you two and slightly scrapes your chest. You knew he was concerned about you, especially since the main reason why you couldn’t be in a relationship with him was because all this responsibility was piling up. You grab his face to make sure he looks at you, but he already is, “I can take care of myself.” He doesn’t seem satisfied with the answer, but he rolls off and lays back next to you facing you. “I can take care of you,” he murmurs after a few seconds of silence, “if you want me too, of course.” That brings tears to your eyes and you roll over to cuddle into his chest. The sun is almost gone, the bed is warm, and you want to be wrapped in Willy’s arms forever.

Roommates | Joseph Woll x OC
Summary: Jane Cambell is Mitchell Marner's best friend, and when he asks her to let the rookie goalie stay in her guest room, who is she to say no?
Word Count: 1704
By: M

Mitch and I had grown up next door to one another. There wasn’t a birthday party, school event, or family function where we weren’t together. We were inseparable. So, when Mitch got drafted to the Leafs, it made sense for me to follow him and attend the University of Toronto. I loved being around the team and doing homework at practices. I was thrilled to interview Mitch for my final papers, to spend time with him again. Once I graduated, I went on to work for the team, Mitch and I stayed close. When Mitch met Steph, I was overjoyed. She was perfect for him, but it left me with more time to myself. Something I didn’t understand what to do with. I found myself wandering aimlessly after work, never having plans.
When Mitch told me the team had called up a new goalie, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Since he had recently moved in with Steph, he had asked me if the new guy could use my spare room until he got on his feet. I, of course, said yes. Mitch had always been a great judge of character and if he felt comfortable letting him stay with me, then I felt comfortable. What I didn't expect, however, was for this man to come through the door with lego boxes stacked above his head. And like… goalies are tall, but I couldn’t even see his face.
“Hey! Thanks for letting me crash, let me just set these down in the room and we can properly introduce ourselves…” He said, his voice muffled by the many boxes in front of him.
“Oh yeah of course, um it's the door to the left of the TV.” I replied, stepping aside so he could walk in. It took him about five minutes to set the boxes how he wanted them, the echo of fallen boxes and muttered curse words heard throughout the apartment.
“Can you help me grab my bags? I don’t really have that much stuff yet… I mean I’m not really new to Toronto but I just lived with teammates when I was on the Marlies so like…” He said, rambling on as he stepped back into the main room. His blue eyes caught mine and he quickly lost whatever thought he was about to share. Like seriously are piercing blue eyes mandatory to be on the Leafs? Because, wow.
“I’m Joseph… Uh Woll… yeah. But I mean most people call me Joe haha…” He said, his left hand scratching the back of his neck and holding his other out awkwardly.
“Jane, but my friends call me Janie.” We shook hands. Joe and I found our rhythm easily. He would leave before I got up in the morning and I would meet him at the office for lunch before going to meetings. We’d head home together on off-days, laughing about anything and everything. I felt like that missing piece I’d been searching for had been found.
The hard-part was always away games. Joe and Mitch would spend weeks away, traveling for games whilst I was left in a mostly empty office, planning future events and booking flights. When the boys are away Steph and I usually grab dinner and talk, but I was hesitant to have to answer questions about my relationship with Joe. He and I had gotten increasingly close and several of his teammates had picked up on some of the underlying tension on my end. It was clear to me, at least, that Joe wasn’t interested in me, despite what Kniesy kept saying. Kniesy and Joe are pretty close, but I can’t help but feel like he’s just messing with me. Plus, I mean I don’t even know what Mitch would do about me dating a teammate of his. I mean he was always protective growing up, purposefully keeping me from his teams. The one time I did go out with someone from his team, we realized we’d be better off as friends, which is how I ended up with Matthew Tkachuk as my fantasy football teammate.
I decided to go to dinner with Steph anyway, as I wanted to catch up with her. When I sat down across from her at the restaurant, my phone started buzzing. I mouthed, “hold on” to Steph as I stood up and answered the phone.
“This is Jane Campbell speaking…”
“No I know, Janie it’s me, I- I just needed to hear your voice” The voice on the phone, Joe, said clearly out of breath.
“Joe what’s going on? Are you okay?” I started panicking, why was he calling me. He never calls.
“It’s. I’m fine. I just- Did you see the game?” I hadn’t. I was so busy getting ready to see Steph and finishing work, that I’d completely forgotten to tune in.
“No- I- Tell me what’s happening.” I felt like screaming, what wasn’t he telling me? The walls felt like they were closing in.
“It’s Kniesy.” Two words that first had me breathing a sigh of relief and then feeling guilty as the walls crashed in once again.
“Okay,” I took a breath, “okay. What do you need from me? What happened? I’m with Steph. Do you need me to get there?”
“Just stay on the phone please. He’s. He just collapsed. I mean the hit didn’t look that bad but I guess it was? I- I don’t know Janie. I don’t know.” A sob erupted from him as he tried to keep himself composed. Where was the game again? I could have sworn I’d written it down somewhere… I looked through my bag, dumping the contents on the table in front of a concerned Steph.
“Are you still there?” His voice almost whispers, having been wrecked by his sobs.
“Yeah, I’m here Joey. Don’t worry. I’m not going anywhere.” The nickname escaped me before I even knew I was saying it. Shit.
“Joey?” His quiet voice still shaking.
“I- I mean…”
“No- I- Uh- I like it- It just caught me off guard that’s all.” His smile was clear even through the phone.
“Okay wait- The game’s in Buffalo right? Let me just… I’ll see you in a few hours, okay? What hotel are you in?” I blurted out, before I could even process what I was saying. All I know is that Joey needs me and I want to- no, have to- be there.
“You don’t have to come, I mean it’s fine. I’ll be fine.” He rushed, trying to convince me not to go, but it was too late.
“See you in a bit Joey, bye.” I quickly said, trying to hang up.
“I L-” I hung up.
“Okay Steph, I gotta go. I- uh- I’m so sorry, I’ll venmo you for the salad.” I said, grabbing my coat from the back of my chair and shoveling everything back into my bag.
“Is everything okay?” Steph said, panicking.
“Yeah, Joe’s worried about Matthew, apparently he got hurt during the game. I’m just gonna fly out to Buffalo to be with him.”
“You and Joseph, huh?” She said, winking, “I mean I told Mitch y’all were a good match, but he didn’t think it would happen this quickly…”
“Oh- Um. No, we’re not together. I mean- I don’t think he even likes me like that… Not that I like him or anything.”
“Mhm, and he called his ‘platonic roommate’ for comfort when his best friend got hurt, and, said ‘platonic roommate’ is flying to another country to check on him… Okay!”
“That’s exactly what’s happening. Plus, New York is barely another country.”
“Sure… Sure. Have a nice flight Janie.”
“Thanks.”
The flight went quicker than I expected. I sat in my seat, my knee bouncing as I waited to see Joe. I was still unsure of what happened to Matthew, but if Joe was worried, so was I. The little pest had started to grow on me.
I rushed into Joe’s hotel, asking the front desk to let me through. Joe had let them know I’d be coming and to let me in. When I got to his door, I took a breath before knocking.
“Janie, thank god.” He said, opening the door and scooping me into a big hug.
“I’m here Joey, I’m here.” He stiffened at the nickname as he released me.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“Nothing… I- I just like when you call me Joey, that’s all.” He said, letting me into his room.
“How’s Matthew?” I asked, grabbing his hand for moral support.
“The doctor said he’ll be okay, just a concussion. It just really scared me, you know? I mean one moment we were laughing about him asking a girl out, and the next he’s on the ice.”
“A girl?” I asked, waggling my eyebrows.
“Yeah, I mean it feels silly now but he wants to ask the barista at the coffee shop by the rink for dinner.” He smiled, squeezing my hand.
“That’s such a good idea omg! Not silly at all, I mean she’s really pretty and nice.”
“It just got me thinking, you know? Like what if he wasn’t okay? What if he never got to tell the girl? It feels so trivial to worry about rejection at this point.”
“But he will get to tell her Joey. And she’ll say yes and it’ll be great and they’ll be together!” I’m not sure where he’s going with this, but I’m doing my best to reassure him that Kniesy and the Barista will get together in the end.
“Will they?” He asks, furrowing his brows.
“Of course, if they’re meant for eachother, it’ll happen.” I smiled, looking up at him, my hand still in his.
“Will we?” He asks.
“Will we do what?” I ask, confused.
“Will we get together?” He asks and my stomach flutters.
“Joey?” I feel like I’m hallucinating there’s no way he means what I think he means.
“Jane. Janie. I love you. Every moment we’re apart is like I'm drowning and you’re my air.” He grabs my face, angling my eyes up to his.
“Joey… I love you too.” I closed my eyes as our lips met, fireworks erupting as the butterflies dissipated from my stomach.

lol so I disappeared yesterday
I went to his office and we ended up talking for 2 and a 1/2 hours!!!!!!!! which breaks our previous record of 2 hours (I know that's not much difference, but the last time, we barely talked & just did our own things. this time, we were talking the entire time!!!) it was very cool.
we talked about all sorts of things--some academic/school related issues I had, the book we both finished for our book club & picking the next one to read, some stuff about his family, recommendations of places to go in Toronto bc he used to live there (also if any of yall have any suggestions I'll take them! I might be planning a trip & idk where to go there). we also talked about grad applications & the 15 page writing sample I'll have to have...which I don't, so he gave me some advice about that.
I'm also teaching myself Latin, and since he's the Latin professor (among other things) he's been helping me out a bit, and I had him go over my homework to correct it. That was a little embarrassing, but he said I was doing really well and that I clearly understand it (which apparently some of his students don't understand as well as I do lmao) (he also joked that I'll win the Latin award next spring, which is impossible since I've never taken a Latin class) (also he hinted at wanting me to sit in on his class in the fall, but unfortunately I have a class during the same time :( so I couldn't if I wanted to)
BUT!!!!!! by far the most exciting thing from yesterday: HE BOUGHT ME TWO BOOKS. two expensive, academic books. he bought them. for me. omg I'm gonna cry just thinking about it. he apparently had some leftover money in a budget for something, and if he didn't use it, the money would go away, so he bought himself some stuff and then bought me two books to use up the money!!!!!!!! that's so so cool and so so so sweet like omg. these are the 5th and 6th books he's given me, he spoils me. but these ones are extra special because he bought them specifically for me 😊😊😊😊 god that's so cool. they're two books related to stuff we're mutually interested in & related to stuff I'd want to study in grad school, so I'm very excited to read them! One of them comes with a caveat though--I have to finish reading it by the end of summer and give him opinions on if "normal students" (his words, not mine) would be able to read it since he thought it was a little dense, but he wants to possibly use it as a textbook for his student researchers group in the fall. but that's really no issue for me lol so I'm excited to read it & give him my feedback! I'm still so shocked he bought me two books like....awwwwww

Info dump on the 80s OCs
Hello Dearie!
Since this story is relatively new, I don’t have much but I’ll do my best to explain the concept and some other random ideas I have.
-the setting is a small town in Canada that starts in the fall of 1982 and I think will end at some point in 1983. It’s also loosely based on my hometown since it’s also quite small
- the plot revolves around the local high schools annual battle of the bands that started sometime in the late 60s. It’s also apart of a wider provincial battle of the bands that’s hosted in Toronto that if you win, you are offered a scholarship to one of the many music programs at any Canadian university or College of your choice.
-After seeing Joy Division live while visiting some cousins in Manchester, George vows that one day he’ll make his own band and enter it into battle of the bands with the hopes of winning. When he’s in his final year, that’s when he takes action. Maria sees one of his posters and despite not knowing how to play any of the instruments he needs, she decides to join as an escape from her parents control.
- George and Maria make a deal that if he teaches her how to play bass, she will help him with his math and science homework as they are not his best subjects and he needs good marks if he wants to go off to school.
- Eugene and Becky join a bit later as the guitarist and drummer respectively. For a bit George and Maria have to go hunting for them.
- all of the other bands are based in different music genres that were popular at the time. As I’ve mentioned, George’s band is post punk and starts off as a Joy Division cover band (something I have not mentioned)
-a possible romance blossoms between George and Maria. I’m not saying anything else that’s it.
-There’s also a romance between Becky and Lucy that’s lightly inspired by Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order (and in the formers case at one point Joy Division). I just love the idea of a keyboardist and a drummer falling in love I think it’s cute.
-Eugene is lightly inspired by guy who was in my music class who just so happened to play guitar (it was on purpose btw).
I think I’m going to end it here since I do plan on turning it into a comic. I’ve got two pages sketched out and I don’t want to spoil too much and I think I’ve done that enough already.
Thanks for the ask!
#know that I also really want to make a folk punk band but can’t cause violent femmes first album did not come out until 1983#oc asks#mutuals! :)

As I set up the small propeller to generate a little electricity while the river rolls through, a dark cloud seemingly appears on the horizon. Trouble. Danger.
The lightning flares in the distance. A storm wielder. A really pissed storm wielder. Supercell is her name to the masses, but I just know her as Sarah. She's my next door neighbour, and one of the many heroes that spends their days defeating my plots.
Minor things, like shutting off everyone's cars to prevent them from driving places. They keep harming the environment!
Or destroying a factory. Does no one understand how much damage those things can do to the environment?
Last night, I took apart the bridge that was poorly constructed and used hazardous materials.
Oh! There goes the Blur. He got his name because of how quickly he moves. He flies, and he can run fairly quickly. I like to call him Blair, the local librarian worker who ensures all the kids in town have a safe space to work on their homework.
Man, I love Blair. Platonically, of course.
I step away from my propeller, giving it a quick test and discovering that it does, in fact, work. It's not nearly as powerful as I want it to be, but hey, I can't exactly call up Supercell to send a lightning bolt into my batteries to charge them.
Even if it would be more ecological friendly.
I brush my hands on my jeans, drying my hands off from sticking them into the river. I head back to my small little abode. It's not much, but it's all that I need, truly. It's a beautiful place, which conveniently hides my lair.
The TV is already on as I head for the sink, which confuses me. I always turn that infernal thing off. I look over and-
Oh.
Oh my.
"Breaking News, Supercell and Blur are in a massive fight with a newcomer to our province! Purple Doom has decided to leave the thriving metropolis known as Toronto, and moved out to one small town-" I turn it off, already knowing what it'll say.
Purple Doom.
Oh, I've hated him for a good long time.
The boards holding my home together creak at my anger. I growl at the tv, spin, and quickly finish cleaning off.
This is my home, and I'm determined to ensure Purple Doom follows my rules.
It takes me little time to get dressed. And then I do something I vowed never to do.
I order my genetically modified birds to pick me up. To fly me to the battle.
And it's...
They drop me to the ground and I land in a crouch, one hand ever so slightly brushing the earth.
Blur lands right next to me, the bruises blossoming on his face are already healing.
"So scared of us, you needed back up, Purple Doom?" He mutters out, struggling to breathe as he notices me.
Still, Purple Doom looks to me. He already knocked Supercell off her cloud, and he looks... genuinely surprised to see me. "Cotton Candy, what a pleasant surprise," he grins at me.
I stand up, giving him my dazzling grin. "Funny, I distinctly recall telling you my name was Cotton."
He stares at me for a long moment, then chuckles. "That's not how nicknames work, darling."
Next to me, Blur is struggling to stand, but one quick glance tells me he's too injured. A few too many broken bones in his ribs to make the task easy.
I gently will the Earth to wrap his chest, gently, to help keep the bones in place. Not that I care if doctors advise this treatment or not. I urge the plants to ooze some of their cool sap onto him. It likely won't do much through his costume, but I hope it helps. I encourage the plants to grow without being attached to the ground. To help the hero.
I can still hear his quick intake of breathe, fearing that I'm attempting to strangle him.
I focus back on Doom. "Ah, nicknames. Like you were called Flowerchild, because you were once all about peace?" I suggest in return.
Doom eyes me. Carefully. Behind him, I can see Supercell struggling to her own feet. Quickly, and I hate doing this, I call on some of the local animals, unheard to them all, urging them to guard Supercell. I ask the trees, too. They sway their branches to prevent any attacks from harming her.
"Are you here to stop me? Or are you finally admitting your plan was foolish and wish to join me in my quest for destruction?"
I scoff. I laugh. I roll my eyes. "Me, join you?" I shake my head. "How about your surrender now, before I decide to take you out of the game. Permanently," I raise my eyebrow at that.
He does the deep laugh that only a super villain with an insanely high degree of egotism can achieve. "You? Kill me? You can't even hurt a little spider."
Oh. Oh my. He's going there?
"Did you forget who ranked the top of the list for strength?" I counter. He falters slightly, that mask, but he quickly brings it up once more. "You may have gotten stronger, Gloomy, but so have I."
"You can't even defeat a couple of weak superheroes!" He shouts at me, voice echoing around the clearing. Nearby, another stream babbles. Talking. Whispering. Sharing all the secrets of the pain it's been through. "How do you expect to beat me?"
"Maybe I never wanted to defeat them?" I calmly fire back, shoving my hands in my pockets. A tree branch snaps, and my hands looks in the direction. Supercell just- she just-
I force myself to look back to Doom, who is readying his powers. I can't think about Supercell hurting a branch because Doom wants to destroy the world and I can't I just can't I-
Snap.
My eye twitches.
A vine snakes out and grips Supercell. I hear her yelp in surprise. I'm not even sure if that was me, or the vines I gave life to by my mere presence.
And then, I do something that is such a mary sue element, but I raise my own power. I draw on the animals. The earth. Even the river, begging for help after the torment it went through in this recent battle.
I let them all have their human-level intelligence.
I let them all become personified beings.
I can practically hear the gulp from Gloomy.
The purple fire at his fingertips flare, creating a circle, but the river, now brought to life, just wraps around him.
My heart breaks as he slashes out at the river.
Still, I have to do something even more heartbreaking.
I have to take a life. An actual life.
And I have to destroy the earth to do it.
"Please," I beg the earth. I note Blur next to me, the question in his gaze, wondering why I'm pleading him but I'm not pleading him. "Please, I need your help. We cannot let him do this to you," I whisper, dropping to my knees, touching the grass. The dirt beneath it. I reach out with my magic.
"Let me up," Blurry Blair wheezes out.
"I'm not talking to you," I whisper, meeting his eyes. I can feel the tears tracking down my cheeks. "Besides, you aren't tethered to the ground."
He laughs a moment at that, like it's a joke. I think he might need to see a doctor. He must've hit his head pretty badly. "You're asking Purple Doom to help you?"
"No, I'm asking Mother Earth to help," I stand, drawing confidence from this decision. The one that tells me that to do right, I must do wrong. "Mother Earth, please, I beseech you to aide me against my current predicament. I ask you this as I have sacrificed myself time and time again to your altar. And, in doing this, a sacrifice will be made on both of us, to protect your altar once more. Will you do this?"
The ground begins to shake. Supercell is leaping over the tree which means-
No.
Another vine snakes out, but she's too quick. Too powerful.
"Sarah! Don't!" I call out, but it's too late. She's leaping at Purple Doom. A powerful punch on his way, as the ground shudders below him.
It begins to split, and he looks down in absolute horror, as he remembers just who I am.
One of my birds whisks in, scooping up Sarah. I hear her yelp in surprise and pain but really, I need her safe.
She's my favourite person at the local introvert book club.
The earth shudders, beginning to close and I launch myself at him, sweeping his feet. He topples in and pulls me with him. I beg my creations to return to as they were. To leave me.
The earth closes in on us and I make no attempt to escape.
He screams at me, pulling me in, dragging me into the depths of the earth, begging me to save us.
But I don't need to.
The earth swallows us. I hear the audible gulp.
I wait the time. Tick tock tick tock tick tock. He can't breathe. I'm not surprised. Few can be in the embrace of our one true mother and breathe air.
He stops moving altogether, and slowly, slowly, I melt into the earth.
"Did she just-did they just-"
I step out of a newly grown tree, winching at the trunk now destroyed.
Supercell and Blur are there, huddled by the small scar in the earth, the marker of Purple Doom's grave. They are both bloody and bruised. Their protective armour is torn.
Supercell looks pissed, like she's ready to take on the whole world. And yet, she's got tears rolling down her cheeks. I know this. "I can't believe she just did that!" She exclaims, finally able to finish her sentence.
"She called you Sarah," Blur comments, removing his mask. "How did Cotton know our names? How?"
Shock.
A small carpet of moss drapes over their shoulders, to keep them warm.
That just results in them turning at me, looking in horror. Shock. Pain. Anger.
"You let us think you died? To save us!?!" Supercell screeches.
"I thought you knew by now, I'm hard to kill," I cross my arms over my chest, giving them a smirk.
They stare at me, Blur quickly replaces his mask.
"Really?" I scoff.
He... lowers it once more. "I..." he begins, glancing behind him. "I didn't know you could do that," he meets my eyes.
I shrug. "There's a cost to this kind of power," I retort.
"So you thought you'd let us think you died? And what, you want to play hero now?" Sarah demands.
"No," I sigh, dropping my hands to my sides. "No, I haven't tried to be a hero since I was a young child," I admit.
"Then why? Why save us?" Blair demands. "That is what you were doing, right? The cold compression? The branches to stop Supercell?"
"They were a shield," I counter immediately, already on the defence. "Do you know how dangerous Purple Doom is? He could've just... snapped and poof! Everything is up in flames and you'd be dead and-"
"Why do you even care?" Sarah demands.
Silence.
"Why do you even care if we live or die?" She repeats.
"Maybe I don't like seeing everyone and everything suffering," I admit.
It's the truth. It's my villain story. I could hear of all the horrible things animals were being abused by. Even regular house plants. I could report to the police until I was blue in the face, but nothing ever happened. Even if the abuse was to another human. I never had proof.
I only had the word of an animal or a plant.
And then I heard what a company was doing to the environment. I begged everyone to help, but I was told that the company was making everyone money.
That sometimes we had to sacrifice the environment for the greater good.
Arguing that the greater good was our continued existence as a species was ignored.
I was brought to the villain academy after that, where I swiftly rose to the most dangerous. Never the most deadly, though. My gifts prevent me from enjoying a kill. The only joy brought to me by a death, like Purple Doom's, is knowing it'll help the environment. Or it'll save it.
"That's a very hero comment," Blair tentatively suggests.
"Maybe," I look off to the river, and I can see the small marks made on her. Where the rocks have tumbled in, and she weeps now. And yet, she sings. She sings about how she helped to defeat the evil. That one day, she'll take her new marks and change them. And that she will heal. I smile at that. "Stay strong, North," I offer the river.
"You can... hear the river?" Supercell tentatively tries out.
I shrug once more, focusing on them. "Look, I'm a supervillain. Apparently, wanting to protect the environment at the risk of breaking laws makes one a supervillain. I'm proud of that. But let me make this very clear, you two are my superheroes. And no one is allowed to mess with you. And no one is allowed to screw up the earth, got it?" I demand of them, and then I pivot, storming away.
"Cotton, wait!" Blur blurs into my path. I raise a fist, preparing to punch him, but he has his hands up. "How do you know our identity?"
"You," I answer. "You're... you," is all I can offer up. He frowns. "You feel like you no matter when you are. You're always you, so I can tell."
He looks highly disturbed at that.
"How do we find out who you are?" Sarah steps to be beside Blair, but she looks more... genuine. Her mask is off, too.
"You don't," I answer calmly. "Or maybe you do. Maybe you already know who I am. There are only so many of us ecological freaks in town."
And I walk away. To be alone. To figure out how next to protect the planet itself.
I know that look in their eyes. It's one of pity. One of wonder. How exactly is someone protecting others, a villain?
They may have thought my power was over plants. They may have thought I used my brain to overcompensate for a weak power.
But tonight?
I'll have to be careful. I've just revealed my abilities. The fact that I can control animals and plants alike. Fungi, too, not that they saw. I can plead to the Earth herself for help.
What's to stop me from figuring out how to control humans, because after all, we're human like at times, no?
And what's to stop me from making a sentient army of trees to fight my battles?
They'll be preparing for the worst now. And I never wanted them to.
But that's a tomorrow problem.
Tonight, I shall slip back into my human life and discuss my latest book, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.
Tomorrow, I will return the book to the library and take out a book called Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan.
And the day after that, I will plot the downfall of humanity's innate ability to destroy the world around them.
You pretend to be a small-time villain. At worst, you annoy the local supers but your crimes never hurt anyone. All fun and games until things change when a truly sadistic super villain invades your turf and murders a few of the supers. No one has seen the extent of your true powers until now.

How to Choose the Best Moving Company in Toronto: A Complete Guide
Moving can be an exciting new chapter in life, but it’s often accompanied by stress and logistical challenges. Choosing the right moving company in Toronto can make all the difference, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you select the best moving company for your needs.

Start with Research
Before settling on a moving company, it’s essential to do your homework. Begin by:
Checking Reviews: Look at online reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau. Pay attention to recurring comments about reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.
Asking for Recommendations: Friends, family, or coworkers who have recently moved in Toronto can provide valuable insights and recommendations.
Browsing Company Websites: A professional and informative website is often a good indicator of a reputable business.
Verify Credentials
To ensure you’re dealing with a legitimate company:
License and Insurance: Confirm that the moving company is licensed and insured. This protects you in case of accidents or damages.
Membership in Industry Associations: Membership in organizations like the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) is a good sign of credibility and adherence to industry standards.
Request Detailed Estimates
Pricing is an important factor, but transparency is even more crucial. Follow these steps:
Get Multiple Quotes: Obtain estimates from at least three companies to compare services and pricing.
In-Home Assessments: Opt for companies that offer in-home assessments rather than providing a quote over the phone. This ensures a more accurate estimate.
Ask About Additional Fees: Clarify if there are extra charges for stairs, heavy items, or long distances.
Understand the Services Offered
Different moving companies offer various levels of service. Some points to consider:
Basic Moving Services: Loading, transport, and unloading.
Packing and Unpacking: Does the company provide packing materials or assist with packing?
Storage Options: If you need temporary storage, check if the company offers secure facilities.
Specialized Services: If you have valuable or fragile items, like pianos or antiques, ensure the company has experience handling them.
Check for Red Flags
Watch out for warning signs that indicate a moving company may not be trustworthy:
No Physical Address: Reputable companies should have a local address and office.
Demand for Large Deposits: Be wary of companies requiring significant upfront payments.
Unmarked Vehicles: Professional movers typically have branded trucks.
Vague Contracts: Ensure all terms and conditions are clearly outlined in a written contract.
Assess Customer Service
Communication is key during a move. Evaluate the company’s responsiveness:
Prompt Replies: Are they quick to answer questions and provide information?
Professionalism: Is the staff courteous and knowledgeable?
Flexibility: Can they accommodate your preferred moving date and specific needs?
Review the Contract Thoroughly
Before signing on the dotted line:
Verify All Details: Ensure the contract includes the agreed-upon services, estimated costs, and moving dates.
Understand Liability Coverage: Ask about the company’s policy on lost or damaged items.
Keep a Copy: Retain a signed copy of the contract for your records.
Conclusion
Choosing the best moving company in Toronto doesn’t have to be daunting. By conducting thorough research, verifying credentials, and understanding your needs, you can find a reliable mover to make your transition seamless. Remember, investing time in selecting the right moving company can save you money, stress, and unexpected complications.

Should You Invest in a Condo in Oakville?

Pre-construction condos in Oakville are catching the eye of many investors. Oakville sits on Lake Ontario's shore, close to Toronto. It's growing fast and offers a great mix of city and quiet living. But is buying a condo here a good idea? Let's look at the good and bad points to help you decide.
Why Choose Oakville?
Oakville is booming. New businesses and people are moving in every day. This makes more people want homes here, especially condos. The town has a strong economy and offers a great life. It has good schools, lots of parks, and many things to do. Families and workers both like it here. The average family earns $192,562 a year. This shows how well the town is doing.
Why Buy a Pre-Construction Condo?
Buying pre-construction condos in Oakville has some perks. You often pay less when you buy early. As they build the condo, it might go up in value. This means you could make money if you sell later. You can also spread out your payments, which is easier on your wallet. Sometimes, you can even choose how you want things to look inside your condo.
What Are the Potential Risks?
Buying early isn't always perfect. Buildings can take longer to finish than planned. The final condo might look a bit different from what you expected. Condo prices can change while they're building. If prices drop, you might pay too much. It's smart to check the builder's history and what they plan to build nearby.
How to Make a Smart Choice
You can’t make a smart choice if you don’t have enough understanding or knowledge of it. Pre-construction isn’t that straightforward and you’ll need a professional’s assistance. Get help from experts. Find a real estate agent who knows Oakville well. They can show you the best deals. Sometimes, they can get you in to see new projects before anyone else. Talk to a lawyer too. They can help you understand what you're signing.
Think about why you're buying. Do you want to live there, rent it out, or sell it soon? Each choice needs different planning. Look into Oakville's buses and trains, and what's nearby. This can help you guess if your condo will be worth more later.
Oakville has some exciting new condos coming up. North Oak Condos 3 is near a busy area with lots to do. Gemini Condos will be in the middle of shops and restaurants.
Views on the Preserve by Mattamy Homes is smaller but close to the old part of town. It is a beautiful 5-storey condo development with brightly colored exteriors with unique building features.
These projects show that pre-construction condos in Oakville come in many types to fit different needs.
Buying a condo in Oakville can be a good move if you plan well. The town is growing and offers a great life. But like any big buy, it has some risks. Do your homework, get expert advice, and think about your long-term plans.

Navigating the Toronto Real Estate Market in 2024: Insights and Trends

Toronto city skyline, Ontario, Canada As we move deeper into 2024, the Toronto real estate market continues to be a topic of intense interest and speculation. After years of soaring prices and competitive bidding wars, what does the current landscape look like for prospective buyers, sellers, and investors? This post delves into the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in one of Canada's most dynamic real estate markets. Market Overview The Toronto real estate market has traditionally been a hotbed for activity, drawing attention from both domestic and international buyers. Its appeal lies in Toronto's robust economy, diverse population, and high quality of life. However, the market has experienced significant fluctuations over the past few years, influenced by factors such as interest rates, government policies, and global economic trends. Current Trends In 2024, we're observing a nuanced shift in the market dynamics. Prices, while still high by historical standards, are showing signs of stabilization. This change is partly due to the Bank of Canada's monetary policy adjustments, aimed at cooling down overheated markets and curbing inflation. As interest rates find a new equilibrium, buyers are adapting to the changed landscape, showing more caution and due diligence in their investments. Another notable trend is the increased interest in suburban and peripheral regions around Toronto. With the rise of remote work and the desire for more living space, areas outside the downtown core are becoming increasingly attractive. This shift is not only changing where people buy but also impacting prices and demand in these regions. Challenges and Opportunities One of the main challenges facing the Toronto real estate market in 2024 is affordability. Despite the stabilization of prices, the dream of homeownership remains out of reach for many, particularly first-time buyers. The high cost of living, combined with stringent mortgage qualification criteria, continues to pose significant hurdles. However, within these challenges lie opportunities. For investors, the current market conditions offer potential for long-term gains, especially in emerging neighborhoods and property types that cater to evolving consumer preferences. Additionally, developers are responding to the demand for more affordable housing options, including condominiums and townhouses, which may help alleviate some of the pressure. Advice for Buyers and Sellers For buyers, the key is to remain patient and informed. With the market in a state of flux, doing your homework and understanding your financial limits is more important than ever. Consider exploring different neighborhoods and property types that may offer better value for your investment. Sellers, on the other hand, need to set realistic expectations. The days of multiple offers well over asking price may not be as common, so pricing your property correctly from the outset is crucial. Working with a knowledgeable real estate agent who understands the nuances of the Toronto market can make a significant difference in your selling experience. Looking Ahead As we navigate through 2024, the Toronto real estate market will undoubtedly continue to evolve. While challenges persist, the market's underlying fundamentals remain strong. For those willing to adapt and look beyond the immediate horizon, Toronto offers a wealth of opportunities in one of Canada's most vibrant and resilient real estate markets. In conclusion, whether you're a buyer, seller, or investor, staying informed and agile will be key to navigating the complexities of the Toronto real estate market in 2024. With careful planning and the right strategy, the market's current dynamics can be leveraged to achieve your real estate goals. Read the full article
